SA8000 certification is a management systems standard, modeled on ISO standards. The criteria require that facilities seeking to gain and maintain certification must go beyond simple compliance to the standard. Prospective facilities must integrate it into their management practices and demonstrate ongoing compliance with the standard. SA8000 is based on the principles of international human rights norms as described in International Labour Organization conventions, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It measures the performance of companies in eight areas important to social accountability in the workplace:

  • child labour
  • forced labour
  • health and safety
  • free association and collective bargaining
  • discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours and compensation

The international standard aims to improve working conditions worldwide and above all allows the definition of a standard that can be verified by certification team.
The SA8000 standard compared to the typical ISO standards, with which it has the formal structure in common, is a reference that involves the whole company. It requires attention and participation by the management, top management, employees, suppliers (sub-suppliers) and customers. The detailed topics of SA8000 are:

  • promote the health and safety of the workplace, with a view to integration with ISO 45001
  • grant the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • combat child labor, forced labor, discrimination and disciplinary practices not provided for by Article 7 of the Workers’ Statute
  • enforce working times and hours and remuneration criteria
